Sept. 7, 2024—A report on STAAR 3-8 and End-of-Course (EOC) results delivered at the Sept. 5 Board of Trustees work session reflected that CFISD’s scores met or exceeded the average of districts in Region 4 and statewide across all subject areas and subgroups.
When factoring the percentage of students achieving “Approaches and Above” or “Meets and Above” state metrics, CFISD students exceeded the average results of both Region 4 and Texas in the following assessments:
· STAAR 3-8 Reading Language Arts
· STAAR 3-8 Math
· STAAR 3-8 Science
· STAAR Social Studies (Grade 8)
· Algebra I EOC
· Biology EOC
· English I EOC
· English II EOC
· U.S. History EOC
This marked the second year that Texas students have taken the new state assessment, commonly referred to as “STAAR 2.0.” Some of the changes impacting the assessment include the requirement of taking the tests online, and the STAAR Reading assessment including both writing and grammar skills.
Dr. Linda Macias, CFISD chief academic officer, said that the curriculum and instruction department has begun working with campuses to learn from assessment results and make the following curriculum adjustments:
· vertical alignment of best teaching practices between elementary and middle school based on STAAR success rates
· provide professional development and curriculum resources based on data to better meet the needs of students
· ensure science labs are in place and ongoing
· monitor and support the Science of Teaching Reading strategies and skills development for primary students
· provide “Closing the Gap” resources based on recent STAAR/EOC results
· administer all district assessments online
· differentiate resources provided to campuses to support students and teachers based on data
“We, including campus leadership and teachers, will not rest until all of our students are successful,” Dr. Macias said. “We will keep learning about this assessment and make sure our students are achieving at a high level.”
