Before starting your FAFSA you must create an FSA ID.
Families with seniors must obtain an FSA ID for both the student AND at least one parent. The FSA ID is the Username and Password that will be helpful when filing your original FAFSA and accessing FAFSA information as required. Think of the FSA ID like an electronic signature

If you are considered a dependent student for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) purposes, you’ll need to provide information about your legal parent(s) on the application. A legal parent is your biological or adoptive parent, or your legal parent as determined by the state (for example, if the parent is listed on your birth certificate). Unless otherwise noted, “parent” means your legal (biological and/or adoptive) parent.
The FAFSA is the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid and provides grants,student loans, and work-study funds each year to assist with paying for a two or fouryear college/university.
